The 2023 Regional Research Conference, organized by the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) in partnership with Lyceum-Northwestern University, was a significant event that focused on “Ethical Health Research Toward Sustainable Regional Development.” Held on June 22nd at the Dr. Salvador T. Duque Fieldhouse, the conference provided a platform for experts, researchers, and policymakers to engage in meaningful discussions about the critical role of ethical health research in addressing the region’s health challenges. The keynote address by Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), underscored the importance of conducting research that adheres to ethical standards while contributing to sustainable development. This conference exemplified how health research can align with broader regional development goals, focusing on both local needs and global sustainability efforts.

The impact of the conference aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. By advocating for ethical health research, the event contributed to the development of innovative solutions to pressing health issues, improving the quality of health services in the region. The collaboration between health professionals, researchers, and local policymakers fostered an environment of shared knowledge and resources, enhancing regional capacities for sustainable development. Furthermore, the conference helped advance SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as it brought together key stakeholders to promote long-term, collaborative efforts in addressing health disparities and strengthening regional healthcare systems. Ultimately, the event highlighted how ethical research practices can drive positive health outcomes while supporting sustainable, equitable development for all.
