L-NU Hosts Comprehensive Orientation Program for IGPS Students on CMO 15 Series of 2019

The Lyceum-Northwestern University (L-NU) Institute of Graduate and Professional Studies (IGPS) recently held a comprehensive orientation program for its students, marking the beginning of another academic year. The event was organized to familiarize students with the academic environment, policies, and resources available to them, while also paying tribute to the late Dr. Marina O. Abella, the former Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of IGPS.

The program commenced with a solemn tribute to Dr. Abella, who passed away earlier this year. A moment of silence was observed to honor her contributions to L-NU and her lasting impact on the institution.

Following this, Dr. Priscilla Castro, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of IGPS, delivered the opening remarks. She welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of their academic journey at L-NU. An audiovisual presentation was then shown, introducing the esteemed IGPS professors.

Dr. Rodney Odesson Raguindin, the OIC for Academic Affairs and Head of the Center for Curriculum Innovation and Professional Development (CCIPD), conducted an orientation on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 15, Series of 2019. He provided an in-depth discussion on the types of programs offered, admission and student requirements, and expected outputs. Dr. Raguindin also addressed the enhanced implementation of academic policies and processes, and discussed the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), underscoring their relevance to the academic programs at L-NU.

Dr. Eugene Reyes, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, spoke about L-NU’s achievements in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings and the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) rankings. He also addressed concerns related to payments and student services, ensuring students of the university’s commitment to providing support throughout their studies.

The importance of research was emphasized by Dr. Cynthia Lopez, Vice President for Research and Innovation Management, who explained how L-NU will assist IGPS students in meeting research-related requirements. She highlighted the resources and support systems in place to help students excel in their scholarly pursuits.

Dr. Elizalbe Berba, Head of the Information Technology and Technical Support Group (ITTSG), discussed IT concerns, particularly the use of Google Workspace, which is integral to the students’ academic activities. This was followed by Ms. Melanie Agbay, Head of the Learning Resource Center, who outlined the various printed and electronic learning resources available to students, ensuring they have access to the materials needed for their studies.

Community service, a core value of L-NU, was discussed by Dr. Edwin Ferrer, an IGPS professor. He encouraged students to actively participate in community outreach programs, reinforcing the university’s commitment to social responsibility.

The program concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Thelma Royeca, Program Head for the Master of Education (MEd) program at IGPS, who encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities and resources available to them.

The orientation program, emceed by Dr. Erlinda Agbayani, an IGPS professor, was an essential initiative in preparing students for their academic journey at L-NU. The event highlighted the crucial role of the CCIPD in ensuring the alignment of academic programs with national standards and global trends, thereby enhancing the overall educational experience for IGPS students. The orientation not only provided vital information but also fostered a sense of community and shared purpose among the new students, setting the stage for their success at L-NU.
